Breaking things on purpose: achieving resilience through chaos engineering

Speaker: Matthew Fellows, SmartBear Principal Product Manager

June Presentation . . .

Agility has brought us iterative software development, independent feature teams, nimble architectures and distributed, scalable infrastructure. But how do you maintain confidence in these systems in the face of this emergent complexity and fast paced change? The answer is to anticipate and practice failure! In this session we explore GameDays, a collaborative exercise where teams safely introduce chaos into their systems, in order to make them better.
  • How hindsight bias impacts our understanding large failures.
  • Why you don't want to build resilient systems, but antifragile systems.
  • Why you should incorporate GameDay exercises into your pre-launch plan.

About the Speaker . . .

Matt is a core maintainer of the popular API contract testing framework Pact, and the co-founder and Principal Product Manager of the enterprise contract testing platform PactFlow (a SmartBear company). He's a self-described polyglot who enjoys working at the intersection of technology, humans, and ideas – ideally fully caffeinated – and is passionate about giving back to the tech community, sharing learnings at local meetups and conferences, running Code Club with kids, and contributing to open source. Prior to SmartBear, Matt consulted with and developed products for some of Australia's largest brands, specializing in cloud computing, distributed systems and continuous delivery.

May Speaker: Robin Goldsmith . . .
In May, SQGNE past President and current Vice President, Robin Goldsmith, discussed the international standards process, why so few seem to be aware of standards let alone recognize they're still relevant and valuable resources, and the progression of the SQA standard (which SQGNE members should know and care about) from plan to reactive to proactive. Robin described the differences among the six working groups he has been in, including tips for influencing standards' content.
