December's Presentation. . . Treasurer & Webmaster Alison McKendree presented December's highly-interactive "API Testing Insights." Past presenter @Ralph Navarro engaged in dialog with Alison and graciously provided the following way-more-informed-than-I-could-do recap of her presentation. Thank you, Ralph. I recently attended the SQGNE meeting featuring Alison McKendree, and to put it simply: it was an evening well spent. From our 6:30 PM start until we wrapped up just after 8:00 PM, Alison took us on a journey that bridged the gap between high-level concepts and hands-on execution. Connecting the Real World to REST Alison began by grounding us in the fundamentals of REST APIs (GET, PUT, POST, DELETE), but she didn't leave it at abstract definitions. She used a relatable "hook"—Google Maps. She illustrated how right-clicking a waypoint to select "directions from here" triggers a Google API call, the same kind of accessible interface available to application developers. It was a perfect real-world analogy to set the stage. The Power of Discovery One of the most useful segments was on API Discovery. Alison walked us through how to find useful APIs within free and public directories, eventually settling on a "Countries and Cities" search API for our live demo. This transitioned perfectly into a discussion on documentation. While she highlighted Swagger as a standard starting point for reading documentation, the real magic happened when she migrated the workflow to Insomnia. A Practical Deep-Dive: The Insomnia Tool The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the in-depth demonstration of the Insomnia API tool. Alison didn't just show slides; she performed a live integration: Authentication: She demonstrated generating an API key from the public site and configuring it within Insomnia to unlock access to the data. Workflow: watching her manipulate the tool gave me a genuine sense of confidence. Application: By the end of the demo, I felt I had learned enough to immediately start utilizing the Spec, Collection, and Test tabs to create my own test suites. Final Verdict It is rare to find a presentation that balances theory with such immediately applicable skills. Alison's session was actionable, clear, and highly engaging. If you are looking to sharpen your API testing skills, I highly recommend catching Alison's next talk [and watching the recording in the www.SQGNE.org Calendar].
