Securing Relationships: Why Building a Secure SDLC is Like Dating

Speaker: Matthew Runkle / Sr. Manager, Product Security @ SmartBear

Implementing security throughout the software development lifecycle is an endless endeavor that parallels the improvement cycle inherent to software quality, agile, and DevOps methodologies. However, it can also be an incredibly rewarding effort when teams rally around common goals, empower champions, and form true, collaborative partnerships. Matthew Runkle, Sr. Manager of Product Security at SmartBear will show how diverse teams are rallying together to deliver high quality, secure software to their customers through empathy, compromise, and a lot of hard work.

You'll learn:

    • Learn how to build effective partnerships between security, development, and quality teams
    • Adopt good enough security strategies to maximize effectiveness and minimize despair
    • Understand how security is really a software quality issue
About the speaker . . .

Matthew Runkle leads the Product Security efforts at SmartBear, where equipping development teams with the best tools to ensure software quality is a passion. Matts career spans the defense and commercial industries, where he learned to appreciate both offensive and defensive security techniques from the perspective of a software developer. As part of Veracode, he partnered with customers to identify application security weaknesses and prioritize sensible remediation strategies, while also leading a team to improve static scanning capabilities. Matt is a life-long New Englander who currently resides in the Boston suburbs with his husband Blair and their 3 dogs: Arya, Xena, and Carolina. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling (sans pandemic) and pretending hes on an HGTV home renovation show.

About SQGNE . . .

SQGNE has prominent speakers presenting on important topics. Online Zoom meetings give us the opportunity to have outstanding non-local speakers like Jon Hagar, Rob Sabourin, and Paul Grossman. However, in the expectation that we would resume in-person meetings with face-to-face interaction and Flatbread pizza, we again scheduled Boston-area presenters starting in January. We're also encouraging SQGNE members to use our forum to share ideas and develop their speaking.

Damon Paul, Quality Engineer at SQGNE sponsor mabl, presented an energetic and well-received February SQGNE meeting on, "Balancing Manual and Automated Tests: Finding the Right Mix." Since Damon didn't have time to demo mabl's tool, look for a bonus March session with Damon demoing.

Thank you to mabl and Leah Pemberton for donating the February raffle book, Leading Quality by Ronald Cummings-Joh and Owais Peer. Congratulations to winner Jon Roseman.

Mabl, our newest sponsor, is a low-code, intelligent test automation platform built for Agile teams. It' the only SaaS solution that tightly integrates automated end-to-end testing into the entire development lifecycle. Mabl's native auto-heal capability evolves tests as the application UI evolves with development; and the comprehensive test results help users quickly and easily resolve bugs before they reach production.

Creating, executing, and maintaining reliable tests has never been easier. Mabl enables software teams to increase test coverage, speed up development and improve application quality - empowering everyone on the team with the ability to ensure the quality of the applications at every stage. Learn more at mabl.com.

Due to Omicron, meetings will continue online via Zoom. We need a new site north of Route 128 in the Bedford/Burlington area for in-person meetings with face-to-face interaction and Flatbread pizza, presumably resuming in September. Please contact SQGNE President Darin Kalashian with meeting site suggestions and contact info.

We try to be thought leaders in booking presenters, but we also need to know your insights and interests. Please let robin@gopromanagement.com know topics you want to hear and hopefully contact information for someone who would be good to present a program on the topic, including you. In the coming weeks, SQGNE leaders will be reaching out personally to many of you to learn more about how SQGNE can continue to serve you and serve you better. Please share. Thank you.

SQGNE relies on sponsors like Mabl, Checkpoint Technologies, and Flatbread Pizza of Bedford to enable us to continue our 28th season as an educational and networking forum for promoting software quality and professionals. Please help us identify topics, speakers, and additional sponsors. Contact Robin Goldsmith at robin@gopromanagement.com.

***Please NOTE***: We discontinued our Meetup participation January 1, so please be sure any colleagues who were on Meetup get on our MailChimp email list and the SQGNE LinkedIn group to keep getting meeting notices and other important information.

Quality is everybody' job but not everybody' specialty. Regardless of your role, SQGNE helps you better understand and apply software quality to improve your job and career performance. Attending monthly meetings, reading and posting on the SQGNE LinkedIn Group, and volunteering in various SQGNE capacities all contribute to your benefit.

SQGNE is free for all to participate and all are welcome, regardless of your occupation, role, or job status. Please feel free to forward this email to interested parties. Interested individuals can sign up for our mailing list at: SQGNE_Signup.
