Reimagining Automation

Speaker: Andy Knight, Principal Software Architect at Cycle Labs

February Presentation . . .

Test automation continues to be a struggle for so many teams. Let's reimagine what "Agile" testing and automation could look like. Face it: test automation is hard. Teams across the industry continue to struggle with the same old problems again and again: flaky tests, poor coverage, and never enough time to develop automation. While many teams have reached success, many others feel left behind. It's time to rethink how we approach testing and automation. Instead of building automated test suites that merely repeat hard-coded presuppositions, what if we built autonomous tools that could learn our products dynamically and point out changes during development? Any time we make a change to the code, we could run these tools to find out if the actual changes in behavior meet our expectations or cause bugs. Although we don't have fully autonomous tools available yet, they are the quickly-arriving future. Autonomous testing could help resolve so many frustrating parts of testing. Let's build that future together! In this talk, learn:

  • What autonomous testing is and how it will make testing truly Agile.
  • How we can start building autonomous testing tools today.
  • What you need to know and do, even if you are not a testing tool developer.

January Speaker. . .

Testing celebrity Joe Colantonio returned to SQGNE in January to report on the accuracy of his predictions a year earlier for testing in 2023. Most were spot-on, with a few misses. Joe did predict about Artificial Intelligence, but way down his list and certainly nowhere near reflecting its actual domination of 2023. AI's continued boom is Joe's top 2024 prediction. Some other prognostication highlights included increased attention to accessibility testing, low-code tools, and greater end-to-end and API test automation.
