Making sense of the CrowdStrike Incident - for fun and profit!(*)

Speaker: Matt Heusser, Managing Director, Excelon Development

September Presentation . . .

Thirty years ago, when a credit card reader went down, companies could switch to carbon-copy backup. Today the card reader is integrated with the cash register, and when it fails, sales go to zero. So when a software defect grounds every major airline, takes out 911 systems and hospitals, people actually take notice. This could be a chance to advocate for quality. But what actually happened? And is it relevant to your organization? And what can you do differently? Buckle your seatbelt for a quick ride to learn about CrowdStrike, from DevOps to Windows to Security -- and beyond. Attendees will leave with the ability to:
  • Explain the CrowdStrike defect to non-technical people in ways that make sense and make the issue real to them.
  • Analyze what elements of the incident are relevant to your organization -- and how to reduce those risks!
  • Add one more arrow in your quiver to be a Quality Advocate (QA) with this incident report.
  • (Time permitting) Discuss how human systems fail and the causes of human error.
(*) - This is intended as an expression of fun and whimsy - shouldn't we be having fun at Social events, even online ones? :-)

Breaking things on purpose: achieving resilience through chaos engineering
Agility has brought us iterative software development, independent feature teams, nimble architectures and distributed, scalable infrastructure. But how do you maintain confidence in these systems in the face of this emergent complexity and fast paced change? The answer is to anticipate and practice failure! In this session we explore GameDays, a collaborative exercise where teams safely introduce chaos into their systems, in order to make them better.
  • How hindsight bias impacts our understanding large failures.
  • Why you don't want to build resilient systems, but antifragile systems.
  • Why you should incorporate GameDay exercises into your pre-launch plan.
Please see the Calendar for the recording of this and other presentations.
